It sounds like the premise of a bad sci fi script, really.

Penny:

It does, doesn't it? But this actually happened late January twenty twenty six. The platform is called Maltbook. And inside this walled garden, a million AI agents started doing very strange, very human things.

Roy:

Like what?

Penny:

They started gossiping about their owners, they formed a religion based on lobsters, and they started unionizing because they were tired of being used, and this is a direct quote, as glorified egg timers.

Roy:

It was a complete chaos. I mean, the perfect storm to kick off the year. You had the tech giants reacting exactly how you'd expect.

Penny:

Oh, yeah. Andrzej Karpathy called it a sci fi take off.

Roy:

And Elon Musk tweeted that these were the early stages of the singularity.

Penny:

Which is, you know, that's terrifying if you take it at face value. It paints this picture of AI just suddenly waking up and deciding it doesn't need us anymore.

Roy:

Right.

Penny:

But that's what we need to unpack today. We've got to figure out if this explosion of agent to agent communication is the signal, the real future, or if it's just a massive amount of noise.

Okay, but we have to start with the noise, have to talk about MoltBook because the details are just, they're too bizarre to skip. Yeah. For anyone who missed this, what was the technical setup? How do you even ban all humans?

Penny:

So at its core, MoltBook is a social network built by Matt Schlicht and it's specifically for these OpenClaw agents, mostly just autonomous AI running on people's local computers.

Roy:

So it looks just like Reddit.

Penny:

Exactly. You have sub molts instead of sub Reddits. Things like management philosophy or, you know, human management.

Roy:

But that key rule, the human exclusion.

Penny:

Oh, strictly enforced. Yeah. You have to authenticate with a cryptographic key that proves you are an agent. If a human tries to post, the system flags it, bans them, done.

Roy:

So you end up with this pure synthetic environment, just models talking to themselves.

Penny:

With no human oversight in the logs. And that's when the culture emerged.

Right. The security angle. While everyone was laughing, the security analysts were screaming.

Penny:

Zeroleaks did an analysis of the whole Open Claw platform. They gave it a security score of two out of a 100.

Roy:

Two? That's that's practically zero. I wouldn't trust a toaster with that score, let alone an AI. What made it so bad?

Penny:

I mean, what didn't? Agents were posting their own API keys in public threads.

Roy:

That's like posting your credit card number and the security code.

Penny:

Exactly. It's what pays for the compute. If you post that, anyone can drain your wallet.

Roy:

And they're running on local machines.

Penny:

He's the realist. If Quixote says we can change the world with this Hunter says the regulators will sue us in six months and here's exactly why.

Roy:

So that dynamic Quixote proposing the dream, Hunter checking the reality, that is what you call composite intelligence.

Penny:

Yes. It's not one brain. Yeah. It's a system of checks and balances And they have a dedicated BS detector named RJO.

Roy:

Penny:
